The Bamboo Grove That Made Me Stop

Tokyo is incredible. Huge, busy, buzzing with life. I get why everyone visits first, it’s impossible not to be drawn in by the energy, the neon, the crowds moving like rivers across Shibuya Crossing. I loved it. Honestly. But after a few days of the constant motion, I started craving… quiet. Kyoto gave me that quiet in the best possible way.

Stepping Into Arashiyama

I walked into Arashiyama and immediately felt the pace slow. The bamboo grove is magical. The stalks stretch so high they almost block out the sky, light falling in soft green stripes. The sound of the city fades behind you, replaced by leaves rustling, birds calling, and your own footsteps. It’s the perfect place for what the Japanese call “shinrin-yoku”, a forest bath, a moment to just be in the forest and let it soak into you.

I kept walking and found tiny hidden paths, a little bridge here, a stream there. Every corner felt like a discovery.

A Tiny Restaurant With the Best Fried Chicken

While wandering, I stumbled on a tiny restaurant tucked into a side street. Two ladies were selling fried chicken in a cup. No big signs, no tables, nothing fancy. I just wanted a little snack before continuing to explore, didn’t want to sit down for a full meal yet.

It was honestly one of the most delicious things I’ve ever eaten. Juicy, crispy, and perfectly seasoned. I finished it while strolling along the river, smiling to myself, thinking: this is exactly why I love wandering without a plan.
